The Sanchi (Agarwood)

Sanchi, known botanically as Aquilaria malaccensis, holds immense cultural and religious significance in the ancient traditions of Assam, as described in the Vedas and Upanishads. Locally known as Sanchi, it is one of the rarest and most valuable flora found in Assam and the northeastern part of India. Synonyms for Sanchi include Agarwood, Aloeswood, Eaglewood, Agaru, and Gaharu, all referring to the resinous, fragrant, and highly prized heartwood of several species in the Thymelaeaceae family.

Renowned as the “Wood of God”, Agarwood has been cherished for centuries for its wide-ranging uses in medicinal, aromatic, and religious practices. The agarwood from Assam is particularly valued globally for its exceptional quality. It is a critical ingredient in world-class perfumeries, used as a fixative by European brands to enhance their premium fragrances. The black, resinous agarwood chips have been traded in the Middle Eastern market for over 2,000 years, demonstrating its enduring global appeal and demand.
